How to get classified

“Eligibility” is the first step of the Classification pathway for athletes with an intellectual impairment. Sport Inclusion Australia manage eligibility processes. If you would like to be classified for Para sport, please visit Sport Inclusion Australia first to check if you are eligible and learn how to apply.

What Para sports are available for athletes with intellectual impairment?

Currently, athletes with intellectual impairment can compete in Athletics, Swimming and Table Tennis at the Paralympic Games. The decision about which sports, events and impairments that are included in the Paralympic Games is made by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the International Federations (IF).

Equestrian, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Netball, Sailing, Tennis, Golf, Soccer all offer sports opportunities for athletes with intellectual impairments in Australia. For more information about non Para sports contact Sport Inclusion Australia.

Classifiers for athletes with an intellectual impairment

At the national level in Australia, classifiers are known as Eligibility Officers. Eligibility Officers are specialised psychologists trained by Sport Inclusion Australia.
